The Creeds

In our Church there are three main creeds, the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian. The one I will be talking about is the Apostles' Creed. A creed is a statement of what one believes, professes, and confesses. A speaking of a creed together with others in fellowship shows a sign of congregational unity. A creed is similar to a flag, it’s a symbol shown to represent what we believe. So with that in mind the Apostles' Creed shows what the apostles believed and taught. It is not likely that the apostles themselves wrote the creed.

In the first article we say: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I learned that this proclaims that we personally know that He is the creator of us, all creatures, and everything else. Salvation from our Lord is always personal. You cannot say that your parents are Christians so you are too. Each person says either “I believe” or “I do not believe”.

We then go on to say: And in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified died and buried. He descended into hell. He rose on the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. This means that Jesus Christ was true man born of the Virgin Mary, and true God our Lord. The steps of this are important. Jesus was conceived by the Spirit. Joseph is not his father, God is his father. Jesus was made by the Holy Spirit then was born. From here on was suffering. Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified by being nailed to the cross to die. Then a Centurion stabbed him to confirm He was dead. Then He was buried. He descended into hell which was important, because He proclaimed that H
e has won. On the third day He rose like a God would. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come judge the living and the dead. Christ will come suddenly without warning, and every eye shall see Him according to Revelation 1:7.
